Shopify Chargebacks: What They Are & How to Prevent Them

A chargeback is when a customer disputes a charge with their bank, and the money leaves your account — sometimes with a fee on top. The thing most small-store owners don't realize: most chargebacks aren't fraud. They're frustrated or confused customers who'd rather call their bank than message you. Here's what they really cost you and how to prevent the ones you can.

Why chargebacks happen more than you think

On a small store, most chargebacks aren't criminal fraud. The cardholder genuinely didn't recognize the charge, never got the order, or didn't understand your return policy. They didn't intend to scam you — they wanted their money back and didn't know (or didn't trust) that messaging you would get them there faster. That's the part that's in your control.

What a chargeback actually costs you

It's more than the sale. When a chargeback goes through you lose the product, the shipping, and the order value. On top of that, most payment processors charge a dispute fee — commonly $15 to $25 — whether you win or lose. Then there's your time: responding, gathering evidence, following up.

  • Product + shipping gone, even if you already sent it.
  • A per-dispute fee from your processor, usually $15–25.
  • Too many disputes can get your account flagged or closed.

The #1 cause: confused customers

A fuzzy product description. A return window that isn't on the page. A customer who orders, hears nothing, and sees no tracking. When people are confused, their first instinct is often "I'll just call the bank." It's not malicious — it's the path of least resistance. Your job is to make "message you first" the easier, more obvious path.

Preventable with clarity

Unrecognized store name, unclear return policy, missing tracking, a late shipment nobody told them about.

Harder to prevent

Genuine card theft, friends-and-family disputes, and chargebacks after you've already refunded. Still worth contesting with records.

Communicate before they can dispute

Over-communicating is cheap; a chargeback isn't. Put your real return window on the product page. Send a tracking link in every confirmation. Message a customer the moment something ships late. Give them a real way to reach you. A surprised customer is a dispute waiting to happen — an informed one rarely calls the bank.

Keep clean records for every order

You can't prevent every dispute, but you can win the ones that shouldn't go against you. Save the order confirmation, the shipping proof, the tracking number, and the customer's own messages. If a dispute does come in, respond promptly with that evidence. The processor isn't deciding who's nicer — they're deciding who has the paper trail.

  • Keep order confirmations and shipping receipts for every sale.
  • Respond to disputes within the processor's window, not at the deadline.
  • Attach tracking, delivery confirmation, and your messages with the customer.

Common questions

Do I have to fight every chargeback?

No. Fight the ones you can win with records — non-delivery, unrecognized charge, and any you have shipping proof for — and where the amount justifies the effort. Sometimes a small dispute isn't worth the fee and your time. Pick your battles, but keep the records either way.

Can I prevent chargebacks entirely?

Not entirely — real fraud still happens. But clear communication and good records can prevent most of the avoidable ones and win back the rest. The goal isn't zero chargebacks; it's stopping the ones that were your fault to fix.

Does Shopify charge a fee for chargebacks?

Shopify itself doesn't set the fee — your payment processor does, usually $15–25 per dispute. And you lose the order value on top. So a preventable chargeback is a surprisingly expensive mistake.
